Some floors have a personality — a visual identity so tied to a space that changing them feels like changing the character of the room itself. The checkered tile in this Miami lodge was exactly that kind of floor. Bold, graphic, and instantly recognizable, it had defined the space for years. But tile has limits. Grout lines collect dirt. Surfaces chip and crack. Maintenance adds up. And eventually, even the most characterful floor reaches the end of its useful life. The question wasn’t whether to replace it. The question was how to replace it without losing what made it special.
GonzaBuilt had the answer: Domino flake epoxy.
The old checkered tile was fully removed, the concrete substrate was prepared and profiled, and GonzaBuilt installed a custom Domino flake epoxy system — a striking black and white flake blend that captures the graphic, high-contrast energy of the original checkered pattern in a seamless, modern format. Where the tile had grout lines, the epoxy has none. Where the tile chipped and stained, the epoxy surface is non-porous, chemical resistant, and built to maintain its bold appearance under the constant foot traffic of a busy commercial lodge environment.
The Domino blend was the natural choice for a client who wanted continuity with the room’s history while stepping firmly into a better-performing future. The result is a floor that feels familiar to everyone who knew the space before — and significantly more impressive to everyone seeing it for the first time.
